GOING VIRAL!

Brands these days are utilising the massive worldwide audiences of social networking and video sharing sites like MySpace and YouTube to create "viral" video ads.  Viral video ads, so called because they spread like a virus on the internet, are made to catch people's attention with something out of the ordinary, something totally crazy but totally cool.  Many times people won't be able to tell if they are real or not cause the videos tend to be grainy and shaky amateur styles- making you believe they were filmed by some random dude on the street.  Most of the time the brand behind the ad is not overtly mentioned in the video but rather hidden somewhere in the background.  The idea being that the video will be viewed by so many people (go viral!) that eventually someone is bound to do some research and figure out who's behind it.

The whole point of these videos from the brand's point of view is to try to ingrain their own brand in pop-culture, to make themselves relevant and stand out from the pack.  They are able to create a sense of community through the shared excitment of the video's viral effect.  People feel like they are a part of a secret tribe of sorts and they can choose who they want to join.  In other words, the brand is basically saying to their audience "Look, we know you, we undertand you, join us, be a part of our tribe, why you say? well check this out- we are cool too".  Whether it all translates to sales is another story, but hey when you're getting millions of hits on your viral video ad that can't be a bad thing right?!

Check out a few cool examples below of viral videos.  The Quiksilver video had something like 10 million plus hits.  Pretty crazy.

Ecko tagged George Bush's Air Force One in this one!  Viral video ads usually look budget, but I think this one cost Ecko a fair bit of cash to make.

Quiksilver invented "Dynamite Surfing" in this one.  There was rumours that some kids were trying to couple this stunt- idiots.

These two guys played the world's largest Space Invaders game- on a office building.  It's not really an ad (unless Space Invaders is trying to make a comeback), but it is super cool.  I wonder who's going to take this idea and run with it?!

DUMMER. LIKE NOTHING ELSE!

I found this awesome website the other day - tagadummer.com.  It's all about how Hummers are absolutley ridiculous vehicles and how environmentally irresponsible and plain dumb it is for people to own one.  In an attempt to educate Hummer owners on the offensiveness of their vehicle choice the website is asking anyone who sees a Hummer to cover up the H with a homemade D and create a Dummer.  (Well legally speaking the creators of the website aren't asking you to do anything- what you choose to do is your responsibility haha.)  You can actually grab your own pre-designed Ds from a download template on the website.  Different sizes are available and the font matches the actual Hummer font design.  Tagging made easy!  Don't forget to post photos of your handiwork to the website and do be careful cause it actually is still vandalism.

I haven't tagged my first Dummer yet.  There are lots of them in Dubai, but my girlfriend is worried that the owner will be some high up local who will have me thrown in jail and deported.  I know I'm too stealth to get caught (physically), but who knows what spies are lurking in this neck of the woods.  She makes a good point too.  Supposedly some Brito dude got deported for flipping the bird!  Ah democracy- how I miss thee.

If you are reading this back home in New Zealand you probably won't be able to get too involved.  Dummers don't really exist.  I think Kiwis as a whole are too environmentally-conscious to buy a Dummer.  That and the fact that if you did own a Dummer you can be sure some hippies would do more than tag a D on it!  Nah give me a Ford any day mate!  Holdens are scum!  Bathurst!  Chicanes!  Petrol petrol petrol!  I find car racing pretty offensive as well by the way.

One last thing, if you are reading this in the States, particularly in Houston, Texas where my bro and sister-in-law live, just keep in mind the odds that Dummer owners are also gun owners is probably pretty high.  Make sure you've got your running shoes on.

Here's your classic Dummer owner.  Dumb-ass.

Go Team Dummer Go!

TAG YOUR STREET!

Here's a form of tagging that won't land you in the lock-up.  This company used water to spray their stencils onto the ground.  Cheap, effective and environmentally-friendly advertising- cool!  If you want to give it a go make sure you use salt water as it evaporates slower than normal water.  Also wait till it's not crazy hot outside otherwise it will vanish before anyone has a chance to see it.

For other cool ideas like this check out Springwise.  Who knows you may find that inspirational idea to kick start your own business.
